Julie Tamiko Manning

Julie is an award-winning stage and voice actor, theatre creator, playwright, producer, mentor and facilitator from Tiohtià:ke (Montreal). She has performed across the country and internationally for 30 years, from Shakespeare to physical theatre to new Canadian work to TYA on national, regional and independent stages.

Her first play, Mixie and the Halfbreeds (with Adrienne Wong), about mixed identity in multiple universes, was produced in 2005 (Neworld Theatre, Vancouver). Her second play, The Tashme Project: The Living Archives (with Matt Miwa), a verbatim retelling of her Japanese Canadian family and community’s internment experience, recently toured Canada and is being adapted into a graphic novel. She is currently writing her third play, Mizushōbai- The Water Trade, about Kiyoko Tanaka Goto, a Japanese picture-bride turned ‘underground’ business woman in 1930’s British Columbia. She has been a mentor for Imago Theatre’s mentorship program, ARTISTA, Black Theatre Workshop’s AMP and co-facilitator for the Arrivals Legacy process with Diane Roberts.

Her mentorship and facilitation with Arrivals Legacy work has been some of the most fulfilling work she has ever been a part of. The connective tissue that this work reveals, allows a deeper, richer and more caring pathway to storytelling, performance and witnessing, whatever the container.

“Respect for and honouring of one’s ancestors, past and/or future, has never been built into the theatre making process taught by Canada’s training institutions. Through this process, I have given myself permission to bring my ancestors with me into any creative work I do. I believe art can be a healing place. I believe we remember to move forward in healing.”

Julie is a proud mixed-race Sansei (third generation) Japanese Canadian and a member of the student taiko group Inazuma Daiko.
